The first mouse was introduced in 1968 by the Stanford Research Institute. You may recall our post on the Hama MW-300 three-button mouse where we cover a little bit of history of the mouse.

Back in the sixties, they were also using a mouse tray designed by Jack Kelley. This was used with a mouse that had wheels.

Companies like Xerox then developed a mouse that used a rollerball, and this type of mouse was used for decades. These types of mice (as some of you might remember) were always used with mouse mats to protect them from dirt and damage.

You might even remember clicking off the bottom of a mouse to fish out some dust bunnies. Mousepads did help preserve the mouse’s control mechanism as well.

The optical mouse was invented in the 1980s and is most likely what you use now. This does make the job of a mouse mat somewhat obsolete. However, there is still something to be said for extra comfort and cleanliness wherever it can be found.
